Mastronardi Produce/SUNSET® is committed to growing and distributing our produce in an environmentally sensitive way. In 2009 The Green Grass Project™ was launched in order to create awareness on our key environmental initiatives.
We have active and ongoing programs to remove unnecessary packaging; reduce packaging size, reuse packaging wherever possible (pallets, RPC) and use both recyclable & renewable packaging.
All our produce is grown in an earth friendly medium using fewer chemicals. We use recycled fertilizer made from recycled leech and reusable organic cocoa peat, rather than a product that would normally create waste.
Our state of the art greenhouses produce lower greenhouse gases and increases environmental sustainability.
Waste-water is treated and recycled, because of this our greenhouses use up to 50% less water than equivalent field grown produce.
In an effort to reduce our fuel consumption, we use recycled ingredients such as wood shavings and other waste products that normally would have gone to the trash.
As part of our commitment to conserve energy in any way we can, our warehouses use energy efficient florescent light bulbs, and all our buildings use natural light from skylights instead of bulbs wherever possible.
